Picture in a Picture
This project involves placing photographs within other photographs. It is NOT a technical exercise, but rather a project that demonstrates the student's ability to come up with a solution to the following question: How can you incorporate an old photograph, along with the memory that it holds for you, into another photograph that you will create that gives a new meaning to both images?
Consider the choices a photographer makes when creating an image. There are technical elements (the how) to creating photographs, but also motivational elements (the why), as well as conceptual elements (the what). Hopefully, a combination of how, whywill yield a powerful what. In this project, you should first unearth a compelling why. The why gives a purpose to the photograph. Making something look pretty is a why, but not necessarily a compelling why. Creating a photograph that provides information that offers viewers the chance to react deeply to it is a stronger why. The How is the method of transferring your idea (or why) into a what.
